Goiter

A goiter is enlargement of the thyroid gland, sometimes with visible neck swelling or pressure symptoms.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

Urgent review is more important if the swelling is affecting breathing, causes wheezing, or is rapidly getting worse.

Common symptoms

The main symptom is a swelling at the front of the neck. Some people also notice a cough, hoarse voice, a feeling of fullness in the throat, or difficulty swallowing.

When imaging helps

Imaging helps show the size of the thyroid, whether it is smooth or nodular, and whether there are suspicious areas or pressure effects on nearby structures.

Why radiology matters

Ultrasound helps show the thyroid size, internal texture, and any nodules that may need closer assessment.

Usual management direction

Treatment depends on symptoms, thyroid function, and whether there are suspicious nodules, and may include medicines, monitoring, or surgery.

What can I do about Goiter?

This entry explains the condition. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.

Thyroid Ultrasound

A Thyroid Ultrasound takes a close look at the butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. This test provides a real-time window into your thyroid gland to evaluate its size and check for any lumps or nodules.
