Dilation and curettage is a gynecologic procedure used to open the cervix and remove tissue from inside the uterus.
Doctors may recommend a D&C for heavy bleeding, retained products after miscarriage or delivery, abnormal tissue inside the womb, or to help diagnose a problem with the uterine lining.
Imaging helps when ultrasound is needed before or after the procedure to look for retained tissue, bleeding, or another uterine problem.
Radiology is not always used during the procedure itself, but ultrasound may help before or after it when retained tissue, bleeding, or other complications are suspected.
The procedure may be used for diagnosis, heavy bleeding, miscarriage management, or treatment of retained products depending on the situation.
This entry explains the procedure. Before you go, read the longer prep guide or find a centre that performs it.
