Intussusception reduction is a procedure used to unfold bowel that has telescoped into itself, usually in children.
This procedure is usually done when a child has severe intermittent abdominal pain, vomiting, blood or mucus in the stool, weakness, or an ultrasound showing intussusception.
Imaging helps confirm the diagnosis and then may be used during air or contrast enema treatment to reduce the telescoped bowel without surgery.
Radiology may diagnose intussusception with ultrasound and then use air or contrast enema imaging to treat it.
Successful reduction can avoid surgery, but some cases still need surgical treatment or close observation afterward.
This entry explains the procedure. Before you go, read the longer prep guide or find a centre that performs it.
