MRCP is a special MRI scan that shows the bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and pancreatic duct without using an endoscope.
Doctors usually request MRCP for jaundice, upper abdominal pain, pancreatitis, abnormal liver tests, or suspicion of stones or blockage in the bile ducts.
It helps when doctors need a detailed picture of the bile ducts and pancreas without doing a more invasive procedure first.
MRCP helps show narrowing, stones, obstruction, and duct anatomy in a way that guides further treatment or whether a procedure like ERCP is needed.
The result may lead to observation, medicines, endoscopy, surgery, or further specialist care depending on the cause.
This entry explains the procedure. Before you go, read the longer prep guide or find a centre that performs it.
