Ovarian Cyst

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac in or on an ovary, and many are harmless or temporary.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

Urgent review is more important if pain is sudden and severe, vomiting occurs, dizziness develops, or ovarian torsion or rupture is being considered.

Common symptoms

Many ovarian cysts cause no symptoms, but some lead to pelvic pain, bloating, pain during sex, period changes, or a feeling of pressure.

When imaging helps

Imaging helps when pelvic pain, a possible adnexal mass, or abnormal bleeding needs assessment, and it helps show whether the cyst looks simple, complex, or suspicious.

Why radiology matters

Ultrasound is usually the first imaging test because it helps show whether the cyst looks simple, complex, or suspicious.

Usual management direction

Some cysts only need observation, while others need follow-up, gynecology review, or surgery depending on symptoms and appearance.

What can I do about Ovarian Cyst?

This entry explains the finding. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.

Find a centre for follow-up imaging

Browse Nigerian imaging centres for the follow-up scan or specialist visit your care plan may need.
