Quadriceps Tendon Tear

A quadriceps tendon tear is injury to the tendon above the kneecap, often causing weakness and difficulty straightening the knee.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

Prompt assessment is important because a complete tear can seriously affect walking and knee function, and early treatment often improves recovery.

Common symptoms

Symptoms often include sudden pain above the kneecap, swelling, bruising, a popping sensation, and difficulty walking or straightening the knee.

When imaging helps

Imaging helps confirm whether the tendon is partially or completely torn, shows how much it has pulled back, and helps plan treatment.

Why radiology matters

Ultrasound and MRI can help show whether the tendon is partially or completely torn and how far the fibers have retracted.

Usual management direction

Partial tears may be treated conservatively, while complete tears often require orthopedic repair and rehabilitation.

What can I do about Quadriceps Tendon Tear?

This entry explains the finding. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.
