Disease

Sacroiliitis

Sacroiliitis is inflammation affecting the sacroiliac joints where the spine meets the pelvis.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

It is not usually an emergency, but faster assessment matters if pain is severe, there is fever, weight loss, night pain, or concern about infection or another serious cause.

Common symptoms

Symptoms may include pain in the lower back, buttock, or back of the hip, stiffness after rest, and pain that can worsen with standing, walking, or climbing stairs.

When imaging helps

Imaging helps when inflammatory back pain is suspected, when doctors need to look for early sacroiliac joint inflammation, or when another cause of pelvic or lower back pain needs to be excluded.

Why radiology matters

X-rays, CT, and especially MRI help detect early inflammatory change, structural damage, or other causes of pelvic pain.

Usual management direction

Management may include rheumatology review, anti-inflammatory treatment, physiotherapy, and control of the underlying condition.

What can I do about Sacroiliitis?

This entry explains the condition. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.

Sacroiliac Joints MRI

A Sacroiliac Joints MRI focuses on the two joints that connect your lower spine to your pelvis. It is the most reliable scan for detecting early inflammation in conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, often years before any damage shows up on an X-ray.
