Thoracentesis is a procedure used to remove fluid from around the lungs with a needle or small tube.
It is usually done when fluid around the lungs is causing shortness of breath, chest heaviness, cough, or when doctors need to test the fluid to know the cause.
Imaging helps show exactly where the fluid is, how much is present, and the safest place to insert the needle.
Ultrasound guidance helps identify the fluid safely and reduces the chance of complications.
The removed fluid may relieve symptoms and can also be tested to help determine the cause of the effusion.
