Whole-Body MRI

Whole-body MRI is an MRI examination that surveys much of the body in one session rather than focusing on just one part.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

The scan itself is not usually urgent, but the reason for doing it may be time-sensitive if doctors are trying to stage cancer or understand a serious widespread condition quickly.

Common symptoms

Doctors may request it when there is concern about cancer spread, bone marrow disease, inflammation in more than one area, or a condition that can affect several parts of the body.

When imaging helps

It helps give a broad overview when one scan needs to look at multiple body regions rather than ordering many separate MRI studies.

Why radiology matters

It may be used in selected cancer, bone marrow, inflammatory, or screening scenarios where a broad overview is clinically useful.

Usual management direction

Its role depends on the condition being investigated, and the findings may lead to focused follow-up testing or treatment planning.

Before you go for a Whole-Body MRI

This entry explains the procedure. Before you go, read the longer prep guide or find a centre that performs it.

Whole-Body MRI

A Whole-Body MRI scans the body from head to thigh in a single appointment. It is used to track cancer spread, monitor certain blood disorders, and as a screening test in people at high genetic risk of cancer. It uses no ionising radiation and often does not require contrast dye.
