Disease

Colitis

Colitis means inflammation of the colon and can happen because of infection, inflammatory bowel disease, or reduced blood flow.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

Urgent review is important if there is heavy bleeding, severe pain, dehydration, fever, or concern about toxic colitis or bowel perforation.

Common symptoms

Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, urgency, blood in the stool, fever, bloating, and feeling unwell during flare-ups.

When imaging helps

Imaging helps when symptoms are severe, when another abdominal problem needs to be ruled out, or when doctors are checking for complications such as dilation or perforation.

Why radiology matters

CT can help show bowel wall thickening, inflammation, complications, and how much of the colon is involved.

Usual management direction

Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory treatment, fluids, or specialist bowel care.

What can I do about Colitis?

This entry explains the condition. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.

Find a centre for follow-up imaging

Browse Nigerian imaging centres for the follow-up scan or specialist visit your care plan may need.
