Disease

Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, or pain.

About this explanation

This entry explains common radiology language and when imaging may help. It cannot tell you what is happening in your specific case. Your official report, history, examination, and treating care team determine what the finding means for you.

When it may be urgent

Urgent review may be needed if bleeding is very heavy, pain is severe, dizziness develops, or symptoms are happening during pregnancy.

Common symptoms

Common symptoms include heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic pressure, bloating, frequent urination, back pain, and sometimes difficulty getting pregnant, though some people have no symptoms at all.

When imaging helps

Imaging is helpful when symptoms suggest fibroids, when the uterus feels enlarged, when another pelvic problem needs to be ruled out, or when treatment planning is needed.

Why radiology matters

Ultrasound and MRI help show the size, number, and position of fibroids and may guide treatment planning.

Usual management direction

Management may include monitoring, medicines, embolization, focused ultrasound, or surgery depending on symptoms and fertility goals.

What can I do about Fibroids?

This entry explains the condition. The next step is having a radiologist interpret your specific scan, not a general definition.
